Water Efficiency

  • Our Approach To Water Management

Poor water management and climate change are the leading causes of the water scarcity our planet is facing. In South Africa, this trend is likely to affect the availability, cost and quality of water – a critical input in the Tiger Brands manufacturing processes. We use water to process products and as a key ingredient in many products themselves. In addition, given that the bulk of our products are for human consumption, water quality impacts the quality and safety of these products.

It is with this in mind that we at Tiger Brands have strengthened our efforts towards becoming leaders in water stewardship.

In line with our commitment to sustainable operations throughout the supply chain, one of our environmental targets is to reduce water usage by 15% by 2021. To achieve this we have enlisted the support of the National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC). The measures that have been put in place include using borehole water for new installations, a leak-detection regime, reusing water at different stages of production processes, water recovery for use in ablution facilities and boiler-feed water.

The bulk of our water comes from municipal sources, and we monitor its consumption, as well as water availability and reliability by river basin and water management area source. We also interact with the government, Department of Trade and Industry (Dti) municipalities and water boards. This enables us to influence legislation, build partnerships in the industry and to learn from organisations using sustainable best practices that Tiger Brands can apply to internal processes.

We recognise that we have a responsibility to promote responsible water use throughout our operations, and also to encourage our suppliers to do the same. We have focused on enhancing agricultural water efficiency programmes with suppliers specifically for water-intensive crops, such as tomatoes, beans, fruits and sugarcane.
