It is widely recommended that breakfast should provide around 20% of your daily energy needs. It should also contribute significantly to your daily nutrient intake, including carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins, minerals, and fibre. Several studies have indicated that people who eat breakfast tend to make better food choices and have a higher nutrient intake than those who don't.

The importance of eating breakfast includes:

  • Breakfast can improve your attention, mental performance and memory

If you start the day hungry your body stays in a fasting state which makes it much more difficult to concentrate. Eating breakfast has been shown to improve learning, memory and academic performance in school children. So, give yourself the energy to go further on the day.

  • Breakfast helps boost your intake of important nutrients

Breakfast cereals, milk and yoghurt which contribute carbohydrates, calcium and fibre to your diet. People who miss breakfast usually don't make up these nutrients later. Many cereals usually eaten at breakfast are enriched with important vitamins and minerals, which help you meet your nutrient needs for the day. Including fruits in your breakfast, will also help you meet your daily needs of nutrients and fibre too.

  • Eating breakfast helps you maintain a healthy weight

Skipping breakfast is not an effective way to manage body weight. People who skip breakfast are more likely to gain weight than those who find the time to have some food in the morning. Eating whole grain and protein foods at breakfast will not only help you feel fuller for longer, they will also help to prevent blood sugar levels drop - which is what causes those cravings for high fat, high sugar foods.

If you skip breakfast you are unlikely to meet your daily needs or essential vitamins and minerals, which will leave you feeling tired and fatigued.
